Two routes, and how to choose
The southern route runs via Mostar and the Neretva valley, joins the Croatian coast and then the motorway to Split. It is longer in kilometres but more predictable, and it includes the Neretva canyon, which is worth seeing in its own right.
The northern route goes via Kupres and Livno, across highlands and through mountain scenery completely unlike the canyon. It is shorter, but harder in winter: Kupres is one of the coldest places in the country and gets snow when Sarajevo has none.
Border paperwork
The same as for Dubrovnik: a green card and written authorisation from the vehicle owner. Without them your crossing is not guaranteed, whichever route you pick.

Winter conditions on the northern route
From November to March the northern route over Kupres calls for care. The plateau is open, windy, and holds snow far longer than the valleys.
If you are travelling in winter and unsure of conditions, take the southern route via Mostar. It is longer, but it follows the valley and is far less often a problem.
