Sarajevo to Tuzla by car

A domestic route with no border and no paperwork, but a road that is more demanding than the distance suggests. A hundred and thirty kilometres here takes what two hundred takes elsewhere.

What the road is like

Part of the route runs on the motorway towards Zenica, and the rest on main roads across hilly ground. The main-road sections have plenty of bends, climbs and lorry traffic, so the average speed is lower than the map implies.

Allow closer to two and a half hours than two, particularly on a weekday when freight traffic is heavier.

Tolls and fuel

Tolls apply only on the motorway sections, and the amounts are small. The rest of the route is untolled main road.

There are enough filling stations the whole way, so fuel is not something you have to plan around as on some mountain routes.

Why people drive this route

This is less a tourist route and more a business and family one. Tuzla has its own airport with low-cost flights, so it happens that someone lands in Tuzla and needs a car for Sarajevo, or the other way round.

If you need that kind of one-way arrangement, ask in advance so we can see what is workable — it is not a standard service.

What to see on the way

Not a tourist route like the southern ones, but there are reasons to stop.

  1. Vranduk

A medieval fortress above the Bosna, a short turn off the road near Zenica.

  2. Kakanj and the Bosna valley

A stretch along the river, good for stretching your legs halfway.

  3. Tuzla Pannonian lakes

Salt lakes in the middle of Tuzla, unique in this part of Europe.

  4. Solni trg

The centre of Tuzla, where it becomes obvious how the city got its name.

Which car to take

A city car is enough for this route. Being an automatic is the real advantage on the main-road sections, with their lorry traffic and constant gear changes on the bends.

What people usually ask

Are there tolls on this route?

Only on the motorway sections, and the amounts are small. The main-road part is untolled.

Why does it take longer than it looks?

Hilly ground, bends and freight traffic on the main road. The average speed is lower than on flat routes of the same length.

Can I collect in Sarajevo and return in Tuzla?

That is not a standard service. Ask in advance with your dates and we will see whether it is workable for your booking.
